Severe gale winds are expected to hit the South Island this weekend.
Weather Watch Head Analyst Philip Duncan says several wind warnings have been issued because strong nor-westers are expected to hit the island.
He says winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour are predicted for Canterbury, Otago and Southland from 3am Saturday.
Duncan says the winds should ease by Saturday afternoon.
He says the gales have the potential to bring down power lines, trees and uplift roofs.
The winds are also expected to affect Cook Straight and Wellington.
