A search is underway in a Far North forest for a man and two children who did not return home from a day hike.

The 40-year old man took his 13-year-old daughter and six year-old son for a one day tramp on Friday in the Omahuta Forest, south of Kaitaia.

Family had searched for the group for some time before contacting police on Saturday.

Inspector Cornell Kluessien says the search has hampered because of the bad weather that has battered the region.

He says police are concerned for the group's wellbeing as they were unprepared. They were only wearing clothing suitable for a day hike and have no food or other supplies.

Their vehicle has since been located on Blackridge Road, in the Omahuta Forest.

The Far North search and rescue squad is carrying out a full-scale search of the area and a SAR base has been set up at a local marae.

Police iwi liaison officers and Victim Support staff are assisting.
