Search teams are preparing to spend a night in the Hunua Ranges south of Auckland to find a tramper missing since yesterday.

The 36-year-old man has not been heard from since around 3.30pm yesterday, when he sent a text to friends saying he was going to be delayed.

Police said tonight two teams are preparing to spend a night in the bush, and an Air Force Iroquois helicopter will also be searching using night-vision equipment.

Search and rescue teams from Waikato will join the search tomorrow.

Police have described the man as being of Asian or Polynesian appearance and of stocky build. He was wearing a light-weight black jacket and three-quarter length shorts and was carrying a day pack.

Police want to hear from anyone who was in the Hunuas yesterday, especially in the Mangatawhiri and Waharau areas, even if they did not see the man.
