Police say a land and sea search for an Australian tourist last seen in Lyttelton has failed to find any sign of the 45-year-old.
Michael Craig was reported missing by his travelling companion, who last saw him leaving a bar on Friday morning.
Police say they have worked out that Craig was at the Embankment Bar between 1.30am and 4.30am on Friday, but it is not known where went from there.
Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey says the situation is highly unusual and completely out of character for Craig.
"It's unexplained, we don't know where he is. He may be in Christchurch staying with somebody else and if he is we would like him to come forward."
Craig is described as an olive skinned Caucasian, 175cm in height, of stocky build, with "salt and pepper" coloured hair in a crew-cut.
He was wearing a two-tone long-sleeved sweat shirt, coloured navy blue and light brown, together with grey track pants.
