Search continues for missing dementia patient

Published: 9:57AM Tuesday March 18, 2014 Source: ONE News

Hamilton Police and family members this morning resumed the search for an elderly dementia sufferer who went missing from Waikato Hospital on Sunday evening.

Trevor Smith, 70, was visiting friends at the hospital with relatives when he disappeared.

He was last seen on the ramp up to the hospital's public entrance.

Family searched for him through the evening and contacted police when he didn't turn up.

Land Search and Rescue have been searching for him since then.

Mr Smith has dementia and diabetes, and his family is concerned he may be very disoriented as he has missed his daily insulin injections.

Police and hospital staff are reviewing security camera footage, hoping to learn which direction Mr Smith was going when he left the hospital.

Anyone who sees Mr Smith is asked to offer him help and to contact police on 111.
