Auckland beach-goers are being warned to closely supervise their
children and pets, after three toxic sea slugs were discovered on
Kohimarama beach.
It is the first time toxic sea slugs have been found on any
Auckland City beach, on the south side of the harbour.
The slugs were found by a woman exercising her dogs.
Last year there were reports of dogs becoming ill after eating or playing with something on the same beach.
What caused the illness was never established but it happened at
the same time other dogs became ill after eating slugs at Narrow
Neck Beach on Auckland's North Shore.
Sea slugs were found earlier this winter near Long Bay, Browns Bay,
Narrow Neck Beach, Cheltenham, Bayswater and Illiomama Rock near
Rangitoto Island.
Tetrodotoxin was found last year in the vomit of two dogs which died last winter after visiting North Shore beaches.
It was not established whether those dogs had eaten the slugs, but several other dogs which became ill last winter were known to have eaten them.
The poison was very toxic to dogs and potentially toxic to humans.
Auckland City Council had erected warning signs and would monitor the beach for further sightings.
Anyone who sees a slug is asked not to touch it but to mark its location and call a council environmental health officer.
