Firefighters are battling a scrub fire on Kaikohe Beach on Great Barrier Island.

Fire services said that the fire has blazed through about half a hectare of land so far.

Around 30 firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze.

A helicopter has been dispatched and is about to start laying water.

No homes are at risk at this stage.
