Firefighters tackling a massive scrub blaze that forced the evacuation of Kerikeri Airport say it will be well into Thursday before the fire is fully out.

The airport was evacuated as a precaution over concerns the blaze could spread easily due to high winds.

All incoming flights are being redirected because the smoke billowing across the runway makes landing difficult. It is likely that passengers will be bused from Auckland.

The fire started at around 3:30pm and has burnt through 20 hectares of scrub.

Four helicopters and 50 firefighters are working to contain the blaze.

Nearby roads were closed and some residents were evacuated, but all have since returned to their homes.
