The New Zealand Education Institute says violence is schools is a community problem which needs firm action.
Figures show the rate of stand-downs for assaults on students by five to ten-year-olds has jumped 77% since the year 2000 .
The Ministry of Education numbers reveal assaults on teachers are up by two-thirds.
NZEI president Frances Nelson says the expectations set for behaviour levels in schools need to be supported by parents.
She says the earlier the problem is tackled, the better the resolution.
