Schools around the country are being encouraged to wear pink on Wednesday as they gear up for an anti bullying campaign.

In a major international report released last December, New Zealand ranked second worst among 37 countries for bullying in primary schools.

New Zealand's rates of bullying in the study were more than 50% above the international average.

Bullying was defined in the report as having something stolen, being hit or hurt by another student, being left out, made fun of, or being made to do something they didn't want to do.

New Zealand also ranked second worse when it came to students experiencing three of more forms of bullying in the past month, with 33% reporting such experiences.

Australia also fared badly in the year five section of the study, just above Qatar, Taiwan, New Zealand and Tunisia, with 70% of students reporting some form of bullying in the past month and 26% saying they had experienced three or more kinds.
