The best and worst Dunedin student flats have been announced today.
Several "scarfie" flats battled to win the title of winner and biggest loser in the Next Top Flat competition.
A high profile dwelling received the prize for worst flat.
The flat at 49 Brown Street, complete with a rusting roof and peeling paint, will receive commercial cleaning or supermarket vouchers for being crowned the worst of the bunch.
"Judges were blown away by the state of some flats, both with sub par landlords and tenants," said Shonelle Eastwood, the OUSA Welfare Officer.
The judges viewed homes where food scraps and empty booze bottles were strewn across the floor.
But, flats with smashed doors, animal carcasses, rats' tails and squalor were in stark contrast to 543/5 George Street, which won the title of top flat.
"We were relieved when we got to check out the top flat entrants who were backed up by great landlords and students making the most of flatting in Dunedin," Eastwood said.
She added that students should not put up with substandard flats, but that they do need to do their bit to keep their home tidy.
