A truck driver came to an abrupt halt at a fundraising barbecue outside the Radio Network building in Auckland on Friday morning.

The man took part of the roof with him as he drove off in his truck after buying a sausage in support of breast cancer.

Builders and engineers say it is remarkable no was injured when the truck smashed into an exterior concrete beam.

The truck's owner says the young driver is devastated by what has happened. He says he made a genuine mistake by underestimating how much the curve in the roadway caused the top of his truck to tilt towards the building.

It is estimated the building will need thousands of dollars of repairs.
