The soldier who collapsed during an entry test for the SAS has come out of an induced coma.

Family of Lieutenant Alexander Teira Cowan say he is talking and joking with them.

The Defence Force has launched an investigation into why the recruit collapsed during the gruelling selection process.

He is believed to have suffered severe heat stroke during the end of an exercise in the Hunua Ranges, south of Auckland.

The 26-year-old remains in a serious but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Middlemore Hospital.
