Putting a smile on someone's face doesn't have to cost a cent - that's the message behind Random Acts of Kindness Day, which takes place on Tuesday.
Organiser Megan Singleton said the day was a chance for people to prove New Zealand was the kindest nation on earth.
"We're challenging people to step out and do something kind for someone else."
Singleton and her friends came up with the idea to encourage people to get to know one another better.
"Life is busy and we're particularly focused on ourselves and getting ahead, and often we don't even know our neighbours two or three doors down.
"It's about bringing back that community feel. We've lost that in a lot of our cities."
Anyone can take part, Singleton said.
"It doesn't have to cost people any money," she said. "Lots of people I know are just taking scones to work or planning to do something in their office or in their neighbourhood on the day ."
There have been some big acts of generosity in past years, including giveaway flights to Los Angeles and a Mexican cruise.
This year, participants around the country have come up with a range of fun ways to celebrate kindness - from giveaway t-shirts and movie passes, to free shoe-shining from local councillors.
Singleton said she would bring bottles of wine around to her neighbours' homes.
"I'll use that as a way to say hello and introduce myself."
