A statue has been erected to a much loved stray dog who became an icon to the residents of Rotorua.

Harawene, a little foxie cross, spent more than a decade living next to the city's busiest highway.

She died last year and locals raised thousands of dollars for a proper memorial.

"I felt something needed to be done to commemorate her," says Fiona Cairns, fundraiser.

"She'd been around so long, we all knew her and it was something that should be kept alive, I think."

The bronze statue cost $8,000.
