If you heard the names "Scarface Claudia" and "Princess Slayer", you could be forgiven for thinking they were cartoon characters or cold blooded killers.

In fact, they are just two stars of the roller derby craze that shook Wellington last night.

The roller derby sport features teams with names like Smash Malice and Brutal Pageant, and players give themselves nicknames like Kiri Te Carnage and Thigh Voltage.

Points are scored when players called "jammers" pass opposing players in the pack, or jam. Other players called pivots and blockers try to stop them.

The sport is nearly 90 years old, but has recently had a new lease of life, with a record 4,000 fans turning out for the Wellington shakedown.
