The holiday road toll now stands at 12 after a fatal accident on the Hibiscus Coast Highway north of Auckland on Monday, claiming another life.
Two vehicles collided near the intersection of Schischka Road and Hibiscus Coast Highway at Wenderholm.
One person died at the scene and three other people have minor injuries.
The road is closed and all traffic north and southbound is being diverted via State Highway 1 through the Northern Gateway toll road.
Police warn the accident will add to congestion as holidaymakers return to Auckland.
An alternative route, SH 16, is available from Wellsford south.
There has been sharp rise in the road toll in the past two days
but it is still significantly lower than this time last year when
there were 25 deaths.
Police are cautioning people returning home from holiday spots,
especially with bad weather forecast for much of the country.
The holiday road toll period ends at 6am on Tuesday.

Police say the road is closed and diversions are in place from SH10 along Wiroa Road in the north and along Te Ahu Ahu from the south.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area or face delays.
