A man faces a number of charges after a lengthy police chase from Auckland early on Sunday.

Police tried to stop the vehicle near the Ellerslie off-ramp at about 2am because he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The driver refused to stop and headed north, despite police driving alongside his vehicle and gesturing for him to stop. The vehicle was followed at a distance and each time the offender saw police behind him, he increased his speed.

The vehicle was finally stopped in Warkworth after driving across two sets of road spikes.

Inspector Lance Burdett says the chase went for around 40 minutes and while the speeds weren't excessive, the driver simply refused to stop.

The driver will face a number charges after also refusing breath alcohol procedures.

Meanwhile, two people have died in a crash on SH12 at Opononi in the Far North early on Sunday morning.
