Friends and relatives have turned out to say goodbye to the 78-year-old Auckland man killed in a road rage attack.

Jasmatbhai Patel died in hospital on Wednesday after a simple nose to tail accident turned fatal.

"The sudden death has shocked all of us," says family friend, Thakor Parbhu. "And the violent manner in which he died, I think it's very upsetting to the Indian community as a whole."

Patel was a man who sought harmony, but it was another's rage that took him away.

Twenty-seven-year-old Bio O'Brien is alleged to have beaten Patel to a bloody pulp after a minor accident on Auckland's Carrington Road.

The congregation at the funeral heard how Patel prioritised his family above everything, that despite his sudden and untimely death, he left a legacy for his children and grandchildren of education, good manners and good behaviour.

O'Brien has been remanded in police custody to appear in the Auckland District Court on April 27. He is charged with assault but may face more serious charges.
