New laws banning the use of handheld mobile phones while driving come into force on Sunday and ONE News reporter Jack Tame visited a driving simulator to see how dangerous phoning behind the wheel can be.

Texting and driving might seem like the worse of two evils because you have to take your eyes off the road, but it turns out talking is even worse.

"It's really hard to manage your speed and really effectively observe what's happening on the road while you're talking," says Simon Lambourne from the Automobile Association.

"When you're having a conversation on the phone what you're having to do is switching between two tasks", says Sam Charlton of Waikato University.

Charlton recommends switching off your phone when you get in the car so that you are not tempted to take any calls.
