A rest home that was closed after a woman was tied to a bed will remain shut following a damning audit report.
Rose A Lea rest home in Palmertson North closed last month after the DHB found residents were getting inadequate care.
The damning DHB shows dozens of breaches of legislation and industry good practice. It shows the place was not cleaned well and a lot of the staff were not properly qualified.
It is the shocking image of 103-year-old Mira Letts tied to a bed at the Rose A Lea rest home that prompted the DHB to close it down a month ago.
The audit report has found the place to be unclean and unhygienic. Rotten food was found in the kitchen and fat was smeared all over the walls.
Martin Taylor from the Age Care Association says he does not think the report is an accurate reflection.
"I think there are certainly things in the report which are true, the book keeping wasn't good and there probably could have been more maintenance on certain parts of the building, but I don't think it's an accurate reflection of the quality of the building or the quality of the care that was being delivered," Taylor says.
The report shows there were not enough qualified caregivers to look after the 13 elderly people who lived there.
The MidCentral DHB has come under fire for the haste in which it moved the residents out.
Royce Johnson had to move his 84-year-old father in just a day.
"I just got it dropped on me first thing in the morning. It wasn't nice," Johnson says.
"Its' knocked him around a bit. He got pneumonia as he left there quite bad, he was in hospital just under two weeks" he says.
Taylor says: "Even if the DHB determined following due process that the home should close, they could have done it in a more humane manner. What they did is cruel."
Rose A Lea owner Joyce Wenmoth says she will defend the damning report. The oweners say they are considering taking legal action as they were not given enough time to respond.
This comes after the shocking Auditor Generals report which
raised serious concern about the care given to elderly. The
government says that they are introducing a new law which will
introduce stricter monitoring of rest homes which is expected to be
brought in next year.
