People living close to where an Auckland taxi driver was stabbed to death early on Sunday morning have been asked to check their sheds and backyards.

Hiren Mohini, 39, died soon after he was repeatedly stabbed in View Rd, Mt Eden, by a passenger who later fled.

A knife believed to have been used in the killing was found near the scene. Police called the killing "a particularly vicious, brutal and frenzied attack".

Mohini left a wife and two young children and police say they are putting "every available resource" into the hunt for his killer. The inquiry team has grown to 40 as extra staff have been called in to examine security footage from around the central business district of Auckland, says Detective Senior Sergeant Hywel Jones.

He says the hotline police have set up since the killing has had an encouraging response.

"Every call we receive is important to us, every inquiry we make is a breakthrough. The community and the nation want to see the person or persons responsible for this frenzied attack held to account for this murder."

He says people living in the streets close to View Rd should check their street bins and sheds for items that may have disappeared.

"Clothing may have gone missing off clothes lines. If there's anything that may be of interest to police then my investigation team will be keen to hear."

An area canvass is continuing in the streets around View Rd.

Jones earlier said the killer would have been "covered in blood to some extent, and would be acting differently to normal".

The man fleeing man was slim, dark-skinned in his mid to late 20s. He was about 1.74m tall, possibly with a limp. He had long, greasy wavy or curly hair, which was swept back from his forehead.

He wore dark jeans, black shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and carried a black bag with a strap.

Police have urged people with information to call the police hotline on 0800 444 014 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.

Meanwhile, the Taxi Federation says the government may now order improved safety measures like compulsory security cameras.
