A brutal and baffling weekend attack which left a young couple critically injured in a west Auckland park has nearby residents fearing for their own safety.
The 19-year-old male and his 17-year-old girlfriend were moved out of intensive care on Monday but police say their injuries are so serious it might be several days before they can interview them to find out what happened.
A man walking his dog found the young man semi-conscious in the park at 7am on Sunday morning with a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.
A short later his girlfriend, who had multiple facial injuries, knocked on the door of a nearby house asking the occupant for help.
The occupant told Radio New Zealand the park is a dangerous place.
She says young people use Starling Park as a drinking spot and she fears her family is in danger.
One of her own boys has been attacked in the park and she will not let her children go into the park after dark.
She says there are always parties in the park.
Detective Sergeant Roger Small from the Waitakere police says police have briefly spoken to the victims but because of their injuries it may be several days before they can get full details of the attack.
Both also have severe memory loss.
"The options are huge in regards to what has actually happened. It can take quite some time for memory to come back if it does at all," he says.
He says at the moment police are baffled by the motive and appeal to any possible witnesses to come forward.
The couple left their home in the west Auckland suburb of Massey at about 8pm on Saturday.
Anyone with information should call Detective Sergeant Roger Small at Waitakere CIB on 09 869 0653, or phone anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
