Mt Eden Prison's foreign owner has met only half its targets in nine months, proving the private prison model is not working, a corrections spokesperson says.
A report released today by the Corrections Department shows Serco, which operates Auckland's Mt Eden Corrections Facility, met just half of its 37 performance targets for the nine months to the end of April.
New Zealand First corrections spokesperson Asenati Lole-Taylor said the statistics show the private management model is failing.
"New Zealanders deserve better than the sort of management shambles being dished up by Serco.
"Of concern is the unacceptable increase in the number of serious assaults at the prison."
The report showed three inmates were wrongly released and one escaped.
Lole-Taylor said the last thing Corrections needs is another prison officer being seriously injured or killed.
