One rental car company is fed up with the Northern Gateway toll road and its problems.

Scotties is discouraging its customers from using the new highway north of Auckland, and if they use it and don't pay the toll, the company will ping them $500.

Scotties spokesman Keith Scott says they have had a huge number of complaints from customers who can't pay the toll.

He says most of their customers are travellers and the system is not accepting overseas credit cards. Many others have found the kiosks out of order, he says.

Firefighters are also worried about their information on the area ofn the new toll road.

The firefighters union says call centre staff are under immense pressure because of a gap in their database.

The toll road and Puhoi Tunnel were opened to the public a month ago but there's still no fire zone data available for the area.

Firefighters' Union spokesman Jeff McCulloch says when a staff member takes an emergency call, the fire zone it's in tells them how many fire engines to send, what type, and which stations they should come from.

He says communications staff are not happy about it, because it puts unfair responsibility on them.
