Police say the human remains found trapped in rocks near Goat Island are of an adult who was small in stature.
A pair of recreational divers spotted the remains at about 16 metres depth at the weekend.
Police have now recovered them and are conducting DNA tests and an autopsy in Auckland today.
They say no clothing or other indetifiable items have been found and police divers are continuing to search the area for any further remains.
Police say they will release the name of the deceased once their family have been informed.
A Chinese PhD student went missing near the island a month ago.
