Last minute Christmas shoppers have set a seasonal record.
Eftpos provider Paymark says at the peak between midday and 1pm on Thursday shoppers were ringing up 131 transactions every second.
Paymark CEO Simon Tong says the resulting 438,000 transactions for the hour is a record.
But he says New Zealanders are continuing to spend at an amazing rate, with more than 100 transactions a second every hour since 10am on Thursday.
"We predicted it, and we're seeing it again. It's been a very strong week, but today will be the biggest day undoubtedly," Tong says.
"It'll break the records not only for transactions but for dollars through the till."
Tong expects in excess of $225 million to be spent through eftpos alone on Christmas Eve, which will also be a new record.
