The recession's done little to detract snow enthusiasts from enjoying their winter.

It's hoped the weather will clear enough for Turoa's upper mountain to officially open later on Saturday.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts marketing manager Mike Smith says there is a good line of cars heading up the mountain this morning which is no surprise considering a record number of season passes have been sold.

Up 18,000 from last year, 24,500 have gone out the door.

Smith says that is an awesome result, especially given the economy at the moment.

He says Whakapapa is on track to open next Saturday.
