Recession blamed for lower power use

The recession is being blamed for a downturn in power use.

New figures show total electricity generation drop 5% in the March quarter compared with the same time last year.

Robert Tromop from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority says the economic downturn is making people cut back on their power.

Meanwhile, wind and geothermal generation is continuing to grow.

Now, 73% of power generation was from renewable energy, which is the highest level since 2005.

Tromop is optimistic, saying on the way to reaching its renewable energy target of 90%.
