Wellington ratepayers will foot the bill to have a ship used in the remake of King Kong sunk in Cook Strait.

The Venture II has been left abandoned for years and the Greater Wellington Regional Council has decided it is now a safety risk.

It will be sunk on Tuesday at a cost of around $30,000 to local ratepayers.

Harbourmaster Mike Pryce says the vessel has been left at Miramar Wharf for the last five years.

Pryce says the ship has had to be cleared of oil and have anything that could float removed before sinking.

It will be sunk in a 1.7 kilometre deep part of Cook Strait.
