Spectators have been out in force at an air show celebrating Rotorua Airport's international status.

Several historical planes made rare appearances at the event, including old World War II planes.

A 66-year-old Catalina, one of only a handful of flying boats in the world that is still taking off, took to the skies during the show.

Built during WWII, Catalinas were used by the allied forces. They were handy for their ability to take off and land in water and their endurance in the air, having the ability to fly for 27 hours.

Roy Bowditch worked on the planes as an engineer during the war.

"I'm too old for it to be special," he says. "But it's very interesting."

However the spectators at the show were more than impressed with what the old girl had to offer.
