A Wellington auction of some of the rarest books in the world has generated nearly double the money expected.

The private collection, which includes a page from one of the first printed books in the world, sold for a total of $430,000.

More than 100 bidders from as far afield as the Middle East took part in the three hour auction.

The highest selling piece was a persian manuscript, nearly 1,000 year old and it went for $60,000.

The single page from Canterbury Tales went for $7,000.
