A man falsely accused of rape but later pardoned after a campaign has been arrested after failing to appear in the Palmerston North District Court for sentencing on burglary charges.
David Dougherty has now been remanded until June 9th and has been ordered by the court to undergo a drug and alcohol assessment.
At a hearing late last year, Dougherty admitted forcing open the door of a Palmerston North house and taking beer and DVDs.
In April he said he was ashamed and embarrased about the robbery and that it had forced him to address his drug and alcohol problems.
He was convicted in 1993 of raping his young neighbour but was later cleared by DNA evidence. He was pardoned and given nearly $900,000 in compensation.
