Severe weather has been forecast for Friday which will bring heavy rain to the west of South Island and severe gale force winds to Canterbury.
The Met Service said an active front was expected to reach South Island early tomorrow afternoon and lie over the centre of the island by midnight.
Rain is expected to become heavy in Fiordland in the morning and in Westland during the afternoon.
In Canterbury, northwest winds are expected to rise to severe gales in some inland areas by midday on Friday.
The winds are likely to be strong enough to damage trees and powerlines and make driving hazardous. The winds are expected to ease at night.
Several areas in the South Island had to contend with strong winds on Thursday.
