Quick action prevents drowning

A drowning tragedy has been averted by prompt action from surf lifeguards at North Piha beach, on Auckland's west coast.

They say patrolling lifeguards noticed a man in his mid-40s facedown and unconscious, in between the flags shortly before 4.00pm Saturday.

They pulled him from the water and managed to revive him after performing CPR for 30 minutes.
