The Queen will be keeping a close eye on her grandson's tour of New Zealand to see how well he is received.

Prince William arrives in Auckland on Sunday for the opening of Wellington's Supreme Court building.

For the first time, the 27-year-old will be Her Majesty's official representative in New Zealand.

New Zealand Women's Weekly editor Sido Kitchin says it's a historic and momentous occasion. She says the British media believe this trip is the first stage to install Prince William as a shadow king, indicating it's the first step in relieving the Queen from some international travel.

Kitchin says while Prince Charles is first in line to the throne, many believe the future of the monarchy lies with Prince William.

A self proclaimed "mad Princess Diana fan", Kitchin is looking forward to seeing Prince William in New Zealand and says he is very like his mother. She says for her, William is as close as she can now get to Diana.

Kitchin says Prince William's trip to New Zealand appears to be very relaxed, which is a testament to Diana who was the people's princess.

But the opening of the Supreme Court building will be met with protests by Ministry of Justice staff.

The Public Service Association says its members will be using the visit by the prince to hold a rally near the court on Monday morning. It will occur at the same time speeches are being held inside the new court building on Lambton Quay.

The PSA says Ministry of Justice staff are paid around 6% less than the average wage in the public service.
