A magnitude 4.5 quake hit Wellington last night and was felt by many in the region.

The quake hit at 10.07pm, 20km northwest of Wellington. It had a focal depth of 40 km.

There were no reports of damage from the quake.

GNS Science seismologist Dr John Ristau says the quake has no links to what Canterbury is experiencing, and that quakes that size are normal for the area.

The quake prompted hundreds of messages on Twitter with many expressing their concerns following Christchurch's deadly shake. fitfreak70 said: "Small quake in wellington. That made me nervous."

And SarahJ_NZ tweeted: "That quake here in Wellington really freaked me out, I just cannot imagine the constant fear in Christchurch."

However, people who experienced the Christchurch quake quickly hit back. Typical was Martin_NZ who said: "Pfftt call that an earthquake."

Meanwhile, Ohariu MP Peter Dunne is calling on Wellington's civic leaders to tell residents just where the city's earthquake prone buildings are.

The demand follows last Tuesday's devastating Christchurch earthquake.

Dunne says the city council should publish a public list of at-risk buildings.
