An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter Scale struck the Southland area early on Saturday morning.

GNS Science said on Saturday that the quake hit 80km west of Te Anau at 1.28am at a depth of 12km.

It was a further aftershock of last week's Fiordland earthquake and likely to have been felt in Fiordland and Southland, it said.
