Canterbury may have had a rocky time lately but a brewery reckons it's stumbled onto a tasty tipple, as a result of the aftershocks.
The one-of-a-kind brew was created a few days after the big quake of 7.1, when a magnitude 5.1 aftershock struck at a critical time in the brewing process.
"We were just mashing in, as it's called, where the malt falls down into the mash tonne, that's when the power went out," Three Boys brewer Ralph Bungard said.
"It is temperature and time that are crucial things and because our temperatures are driven by electricity, we were sort of stuck."
With the power off for 45 minutes, it could have been a disaster but Bungard said they decided to go ahead anyways, hoping for a bit of luck.
"We could've lost the whole lot, in which case we would have had to get it destroyed but luckily we thought 'we'll wing it' you know."
The brew came out stronger than usual, due to the reduction in the amount of water used and ended up with an alcohol content of 7.1%, to mark the magnitude 7.1 earthquake.
Seven weeks later, the chance taken by Three Boys Brewery seemed to have paid off, with the new brew impressing the local competition.
Harringtons' brewer Mark White said the beer was absolutely spot on.
"It's really good. I like the secret ingredient... just gotta wait for the next big one."
There are only 1900 bottles of the earthquake aftershock brew.
