Protesters have disrupted an open-day at a mine on the Coromandel.

Local residents and members of environmental group Coromandel Watchdog gained access to the open pit area at Newmont Waihi Gold's Martha mine.

About 20 protesters wore t-shirts with lettering which spelt out "No More Mining".

Spokesman Dennis Tegg says people value the Coromandel for the way it is, and don't want to see the region industrialised and degraded by mining.

The group are fiercely opposed to plans by the company to expand its operations.
