  • Protest marks seven years of war

Protesters in Auckland have marked the seventh anniversary of the invasion of Iraq outside the US Consulate.

People taking part were encouraged to take an old pair of shoes.

Shoe-throwing is being used more often to protest against political leaders, and is considered an insult in some areas. Targets have included former US President George Bush and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

Global Peace and Justice is demanding the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of foreign troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, including New Zealand's SAS troops.

The group says the government's decision to send the SAS to Afghanistan has meant that NZ is directly involved in combat against the people of that country.

It says the wars and occupation have cost more than one million lives with millions more driven into exile. More than 6400 foreign troops have been killed, with tens of thousands more badly injured.

Global Peace and Justice says the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan have cost billions of dollars.
