Praise for plastic bag policy

Foodstuffs is being praised for introducing a five cent charge on its plastic bags.

Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey is spearheading a campaign to halve the consumption of plastic shopping bags in his city within five years. He says plastic is increasingly being recognised around the world as an environmental disaster.

Harvey says countries like Ireland and Australia have already taken major steps to reduce the number of plastic bags they use, in some cases banning them outright.

He says the charge will certainly make shoppers think twice.
