A strong earthquake was recorded in the Bay of Plenty early on Thursday morning, but it was so deep there is likely to be little damage.
The quake was 5.5 on the Richter scale, 150 kilometres deep and was centred 10 kilometres south-west of Matata.
It struck at around 3am and GNS Science says it is likely to have been felt throughout the North Island.
