Canterbury's fragile power system is under pressure tonight with outages in the eastern suburbs and rural areas.
Heavy rain and wind is battering Christchurch, and residents in the Bexley and New Brighton areas are reporting power outages.
Orion chief executive Roger Sutton says some people running on generators have overloaded the system.
He says there is also been a wide outage in Hororata since around 7pm.
Sutton says they are working hard to get it back on but the conditions are not helping.
He says if power still is not on people will be better off going to bed and tucking up warmly.
Sutton says trees falling across lines in rural areas have also caused outages around the region.
