Prison escapee Kevin Polwart will be sentenced in the Wellington District Court later this month after pleading guilty on Friday to aggravated robbery and escaping from Rimutaka Prison.

Polwart appeared in the Porirua District Court where he originally faced charges of escaping and the possession of two firearms. However police announced an additional charge of aggravated robbery. Polwart admitted all the charges.

He escaped from Rimutaka Prison on June 7 and admitted carrying out the aggravated robbery of an Armourguard security officer in Auckland while on the run.

Police say nearly $50,000 was taken.

The 40-year-old was two years into a 10 year sentence for one of New Zealand's largest armed robberies when he escaped.

He was recaptured on July 18. He has been remanded in custody to reappear in the Wellington District Court on August 17 for sentencing and a reparation report.
