The Police union is demanding a review of the country's firearms policy - to make guns more accessible to officers.

This follows Constable Jeremy Snow being shot several times in South Auckland.

A 28-year-old has been charged with his attempted murder.

Police Association president Greg O'Connor says seven police officers have been shot in the past 18 months.

He says firearms need to be more accessible to police officers.

Greg O'Connor says there is a flawed debate that somehow more criminals will carry guns if police have guns, but he says it is quite clear criminals already have them.

He suggests firearms be in an unlocked cabinet sitting beside officers in their patrol car.
