Homicide police hunting the killer of an Auckland taxi driver are disappointed at the public response to appeals for help.
Hiren Mohini, 39, died in a frenzied knife attack in his cab in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden on January 31.
The release of security camera footage of a man regarded as the number one suspect seen walking through down town Auckland shortly before the slaying has produced little response.
"I would have thought there would have been more information coming in than there has," inquiry head Detective Sergeant Hywel Jones says.
"We've had the odd call but we certainly have not been flooded with calls."
The man was carrying a blue bag similar to one covered with Mohini's blood which was found near the murder scene.
Security footage of the man, who was of Asian appearance, is now being displayed in 30 supermarkets from Auckland to Hamilton, on buses and on a downtown Auckland billboard, Jones says.
Police were targeting the Asian community after it was found many were not aware of the killing, despite wide publicity.
The killer was believed to have got into the cab in Federal St, near SkyCity.
The cab ride lasted eight minutes before Mohini was repeatedly stabbed, causing him to lose control of his vehicle, which crashed into a tree.
"There is no doubt in my mind that the man who climbed into that cab is connected to this homicide," Jones says.
He has again urged people think carefully about anyone who might be showing strange or nervous behaviour since the slaying.
"He has committed, presumably for the first time in his life, the ultimate crime - a homicide - and I would suggest that will be sticking with him for quite some time so I wouldn't suggest he is going to be acting normally any time soon."
