A woman found dead in council flats could have been murdered with police saying she had just moved in and already been in trouble with neighbours.

Police have spent much of the day at the Newtown Park flats on Mansfield St in Wellington.

The body was discovered shortly after 3pm yesterday and the woman hadn't been seen since last Thursday.

"The occupant of (flat) 166 has been here about one month. We've spoken to a lot of the neighbours. They can't give us a lot of information but they have told us there has been some possible argument within the last week," said Acting Detective Inspector Scott Miller of Wellington police.

Three years ago, the city council employed security guards at the flats after reports of drug dealing, violence and gang activity.

Police hope post mortem results tomorrow will confirm if it's a murder case.

Police would like anyone who may have seen any activity around Flat 166 in the past week to get in touch.
