Christchurch police have been unable to identify an elderly woman killed in a house fire last night.

The Fire Service was called to the blaze on Stourbridge St in Spreydon just before 6pm and found the house well alight.

They were unable to save the female occupant.

A post-mortem examination was carried out today on the woman's body, but police say the woman has not been able to be idenitified through usual means, and formal identification may take some days.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing and police say initial indications are that the fire is not suspicious.

The fire appears to have started in the kitchen and there was no smoke alarm in the house.
