Eastern Waikato police are appealing for witnesses to a crash near Morrinsville this morning that has left a driver fighting for his life.

An east bound Ford Falcon car and a west bound large tractor and trailer unit collided at the intersection of Kereone and Cussen Roads about 9.15am.

The driver of the car was seriously injured and was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance in a critical condition.

The tractor driver was shaken but unhurt.

"At this stage, because we haven't been able to speak to any independent witnesses, we haven't been able to ascertain the cause of the crash," said Sergeant Neil Faulkner Acting Matamata-Piako Sub Area Manager.

Police want anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward.

Any witnesses are being asked to contact Constable Rob Colley of the Matmata Strategic Traffic Unit on 07 888 7117.
